TWO MATES, TWO VEHICLES AND AFRICA

Me

9 Years ago I was travelling in the Middle East and consistently ran into a Swede named Philip.  Philip was riding a motorcycle from Sweden to Spain to Egypt and proselytised the virtues of travel in this way. Over beers and sambucca, an overland trip from one end of Africa to the other was hatched and consummated by Philip gifting me his adventure motorcyling bible, on the shores of the Red Sea.

Cameron

Years later, over wine, I spoke to Cameron of the above plan and fresh from his exploits in the Tanzanian mining industry, he expressed an interest. His interest however, was in a 4x4 rather than a motorbike. Perhaps wisely.

Since then, the plan has grown and flourished into an extended trip away from Australia, work and a sensible life. We started in Tanzania and we hope to finish in London, via South Africa and the West Coast of Africa (including Nigeria, where Philip now lives and we can hopefully catch up...)

The Badger

A few months ago, over Facebook, a British couple answered my query about buying vehicles in East Africa.  They were selling a '92 Land Rover Defender 110. Cam pounced and pulled off an improbable yet incredibly fortuitous sale. With great mutual trust, Cam brought the Badger from Ash in London, over Facebook, without ever meeting Ash or the Badger! The Badger is named for his English heritage, surly disposition and growliness.

The Baja

For now I am on the Baja, courtesy of the incredible generosity of Rob Voortman. Nothing wrong with two dudes just helping each other out...From Jo'burg to Cape Town, it's now a dash from the SACU, into Angola and from there we shall see. The Baja is a beautiful, bug-eyed, Honda XR 250 Baja. See my blog, the Silly Season for a better introduction.
